Asylum statistics September 2015

  • 5.512 asylum applications were filed in Belgium in September 2015, an increase of 19.3 % compared to August 2015 and of 206.7 % compared to September 2014.
  • In September, the main countries of origin were : Iraq (2,207 applications, 40 %), Syria (1,507 applications, 27.3 %), Afghanistan (523 applications, 9.5 %) and Somalia (175 applications, 3.2 %). Iraq and Syria represent more than two thirds (67.3 %) of all the asylum applications filed in Belgium in September 2015. Applicants of undetermined nationality (2.6 %), Russia (1.4 %), the Democratic Republic of Congo (1.3 %), China (1.2 %), Guinea (1.1 %) and Albania (1.1 %) complete the top 10 of countries of origin.
  • Of the 5.512 asylum applications registered in September, 346 (6.3 %) are multiple applications. The proportion of multiple applications has been steadily decreasing since the start of 2015.
  • In September, the total number of decisions taken by the CGRS amounted to 1.317 of which 196 decisions concerned multiple applications (79 decisions taking the application into consideration and 117 refusals to take the application into consideration).
  • Among the 1,121 other decisions (decisions on the substance) taken by the CGRS in September, there were 534 decisions to grant refugee status and 94 decisions to grant subsidiary protection. In September 2015, the protection rate thus amounted to 56 % (628 positive decisions out of 1,121 decisions on the substance).
  • At the end of September, the total caseload of the CGRS consisted of 6.738 cases. With a normal caseload of 3.900 the actual backlog consists of 2.838 cases. It has to be noted that most applications filed in August and September 2015 have still to be communicated to the CGRS by the Immigration Department.
