Asylum statistics July 2015

  • 2,975 asylum applications were registered in Belgium in July 2015, an increase of 30 % compared to June 2015.
  • In July, the main countries of origin were: Iraq (887 applications, 29.8 %), Syria (512 applications, 17.2 %), Afghanistan (357 applications, 12 %) and Somalia (261 applications, 8.8 %). These four countries represent more than two applications out of three ( 67.8 %) registered in July. Undetermined nationality (2.7 %), Pakistan (2,5 %), Guinea (2,2 %), Russia (1,9 %), Albania (1,5 %) and Burundi (1,5 %) complete the top 10 of countries of origin.
  • Of the 2,975  asylum applications registered in July, 345 (11.6 %) are multiple applications, mainly filed by asylum seekers from Afghanistan (49 applications), Russia (29 applications) and Iraq (20 applications).
  • In July, the total number of decisions taken by the CGRS amounted 1,220, of which 276 decisions concerned multiple applications (97 decisions taking the application into consideration and 206 refusals to take the application into consideration).
  • Among the 944 other decisions (decisions on the substance) taken by the CGRS in July, there were 499 decisions to grant refugee status and 85 decisions to grant subsidiary protection. The protection rate amounted to 61.8 % (584 positive decisions out of 944 decisions on the substance).
  • At the end of July, the total workload of the CGRS consisted of 5,830 cases. With a normal workload of 3,900 cases, the actual backlog consists of 1,930 cases.
